William Avery Thompson Ordained as First Bishop of the Diocese of Western Anglicans

On Saturday, October 31, 2009, on the Eve of All Saints’ Day, bishops, clergy and laity from around the United States, Canada and Uganda gathered in Newport Beach for the ordination and consecration of William Avery Thompson as first Bishop of the Diocese of Western Anglicans. The service was held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church.

The Most Rev. Robert Duncan, Archbishop of the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA), was chief consecrator. The co-consecrators were The Right Rev. John A.M. Guernsey, The Right Rev. William H. Ilgenfritz, and The Right Rev. William Murdoch.

Archbishop Duncan said, “Bishop Thompson’s strength is that he has a strong prayer life and is a wonderful pastor. He will be a good shepherd to his people.”

After the ceremony, Bishop Thompson said he never aspired to become Bishop and was content to lead his flock at All Saints Anglican Church in Long Beach. He had even thought of retiring in 2008 but the Lord had other plans for him.

“The consecration ceremony brought on a sense of unbelievable and overwhelming awe,” said the newly consecrated Bishop. “I will work hard for the Lord and ask for prayerful support from the people of this diocese.”

Bishop Thompson said his “greatest challenge as Bishop will be to expand the Kingdom of God through evangelism and church planting. This is vital for the diocese and for those in Southern California who do not know the Lord.”

Bishop Thompson will continue as Rector of All Saints’ Anglican Church in Long Beach in addition to being Bishop of the Diocese of Western Anglicans.
